Rumi says “a child wonders and then a man knows, finally an enlightened being again gets back his child like wonder”
Hanuman says to Lord Rama “When I don't know who I am, I serve you. When I know who I am, I am you.” Hanuman addressed himself as the servant of Rama by saying “Dasoham Kosalendraya” it is said that he reached the state of “Soham” when he was hugged by Lord Rama. However even after reaching the “Soham” state, Hanuman got down and still remains a subordinate of Lord Rama. This is the height of Unlearning.
In Vedanta there are two types of Vidya “Para Vidya” and “Apara Vidya.” While Para Vidya is learning about the manifestations of the Absolute, know about the ways to lead a life of quality in this world. Apara Vidya is to explore self to know who I am. While the former is objective learning the latter is subjective learning. After knowing the Para Vidya it is necessary to unlearning what is learned so that we are open to learning “the unknown” and beauty lies in experiencing this path.
A man would be anxious to reach the summit of a mountain the process of climbing is very exciting to him and after reaching the summit he cannot stay there for long. He has to come back to the valley. The climbing down after reaching the summit is the experience that is unmatchable to him.
They say Ignorance is Bliss, yes at this stage for the person who has scaled the summit and is climbing down the mountain Ignorance is surely Bliss. And most importantly when he is in the summit he also understands that there were many paths to the summit other than that he has used. Unlearning provides the seeker -- tolerance, acceptance, non judgmental attitude, broad-mindedness.
